What is OSU doing to address alcohol abuse prevention?
The Student Wellness Center is committed to providing OSU students, faculty, and staff with education regarding high-risk alcohol use and to make health and wellness-enhancing experiences a priority. Ohio State's Comprehensive Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Plan.
e-CHUG
The e-CHUG (electronic Check-Up to Go) is an interactive web survey that allows college and university students to enter information about their drinking patterns and receive feedback about their use of alcohol. The assessment takes about 6-7 minutes to complete, is self-guided, and requires no face-to-face contact time with a counselor or administrator. For more information contact Connie Boehm.
Don't Cancel That Class!
To All Faculty and Staff: If you must miss a class for any reason, Don't Cancel That Class! Instead, the Student Wellness Center can provide a guest speaker or presenter to cover your class!
These presentations are educational, interactive, and encourage students to critically examine their assumptions, values, attitudes, and present knowledge about certain wellness issues. This is an excellent way to provide Ohio State students with important information about health topics of concern to all college students and to educate them about the wide range of services available from the Student Wellness Center.
There are a variety of important college health topics from which to choose. In many cases, the presentations can be tailored to fit the subject matter of the course or the specific needs of the students. (For example, in a communications class, an alcohol presentation can focus on social norm programming, and in a business class, an HIV presentation can focus on AIDS and the laws about discrimination.)
To schedule a presentation, please use our on-line presentation request form.
Reality Bytes
What is Reality Bytes? "Reality Bytes for Faculty" is one of the Student Wellness Center's initiatives to promote faculty involvement in students' health and wellness issues. "Reality Bytes for Faculty", based on a similar award-winning program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, is a program that displays normative information on campus issues in small info-bytes called, "Reality Bytes". Many of the "Reality Bytes" are surprising social norm messages regarding alcohol and other drug use and sexual health, while others are more subdued, providing general information about Student Wellness and other Student Affairs departments.
What is Social Norms Theory? Social Norms Theory implies that people would rather be “normal”, than “healthy”, and that many of their decisions and behaviors will be based on what they perceive most of their peers are doing. Research shows, however, that most students have a “misperception” of what is actually occurring. For example, students assume that their peers are drinking more often, and consuming more alcohol at parties, than they actually are. Positive social norms messages, like those included in the “Reality Bytes”, aim to correct these misperceptions and promote healthy wellness norms on campus.
How can I utilize Reality Bytes in the classroom? Faculty and staff are encouraged to utilize the “Reality Bytes” in any number of ways they see fit: allow the presentation to run as students enter or exit the classroom or during an exam, adapt the slides to fit in with the course content, or cut and paste relevant slides onto the end of existing lecture presentations.
